It’s no secret that we’re champions of Craft CMS, having developed on the platform since the early days of its launch. So, when the opportunity came up to plan and host Leeds’ first Craft CMS event, we knew we were up to the task!
We were also thrilled when the team at Craft CMS themselves offered to sponsor the event - providing drinks, pizza and some awesome Craft CMS merch. Here’s how the event went down.
The aim of the Meetup for us was to bring the Yorkshire Craft CMS community together, to share knowledge and help each other to solve problems.
Getting the venue right is important for any event, and we wanted somewhere which was comfortable, informal but also provided a good space to network and give talks in - so Leeds’ Headrow House was an ideal fit!
With beers in hand (craft beers of course!), we took our seats to hear insights from our Craft expert speakers.
Talk 1: Our journey intro Craft - Martyn Lee, MD Blue Mantis
First to kick off the night was Blue Mantis MD, Martyn Lee. Martyn took the crowd through our journey into using Craft CMS and why it’s our cms of choice.
Martyn explained the 4 key areas we consider when choosing a cms: Support, Security, Flexibility & Performance, and how Craft CMS delivers on all of these aspects. He also took us through some of Blue Mantis’ own Craft plugins - from our popular infinite scroll to the useful private messaging tool.
After his talk Martyn explained “I enjoyed presenting to such an engaged audience, it was also great to connect with other speakers who brought a wealth of experience from different backgrounds”.
Talk 2: Crafting solo - Christopher Dowson
Next up was Chris, who delivered a fun talk on his experience being a Craft ‘one man band’. Chris explained how Craft CMS had made his life as a developer much easier, allowing him to create a streamlined process. When Chris explained how he extracts and embeds critical css, the devs in the crowd got quite excited - so he kindly shared his Gulpfile with us afterwards!
Talk 3: A journey intro Craft plugin development - Sam Birch
After a much enjoyed pizza break (the hoisin duck pizza was a crowd pleaser!), Sam took to the stage with his insightful talk on Craft plugin development. The talk highlighted some interesting points on plugin quality. We caught up with Sam after his talk who said “The CraftCMS meetup in Leeds is off to a flyer, a great night and the community are lucky to have an agency like Blue Mantis at the helm!”
More to come
What a great night! We finished off the evening by enjoying more drinks, a little too much pizza and getting to know fellow Craft-ers. Thank you to everyone who attended our first Craft event and to our fantastic speakers! It was a fun night with good people and we look forward to hosting more in the future.
Keep an eye out for the next event on our Craft CMS Leeds Meetup page - we hope to see you at the next one!
